Getting started

Install Popwell, turn on the theme app embed and publish your first popup or announcement bar.

Popwell adds discount popups and announcement bars to your Online Store. You build campaigns in the app, and a theme app embed shows them on your storefront. You don’t need to edit theme code.

Install the app

  1. Open Popwell in the Shopify App Store and select Install.
  2. Choose a plan on the Shopify plan page (Free or Pro). Popwell opens once a plan is approved. See Plans and billing.
  3. Popwell appears under Apps in your admin, with two pages: Campaigns and Setup.

Turn on the theme app embed

Saving a campaign is not enough. Customers only see Popwell when the app embed is on in your published theme.

  1. In Popwell, open Setup and select Activate in theme now. The theme editor opens on the App embeds panel. You can also go to Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds yourself.
  2. Turn on Popwell popup. Its Enable popups from the app setting is on by default; leave it on.
  3. Select Save in the theme editor.

Popwell checks your published theme each time you open the app:

What you see What it means
Theme connected on the Setup page, and Theme app embed active & connected on the Campaigns page The embed is on. Active campaigns can show.
Popup is not active in the theme yet (warning banner) The embed is off or the theme wasn’t saved. Use Activate in theme now.

The check only looks at your published theme. If you turn on the embed in an unpublished theme, the banner stays until you publish that theme.

Create your first campaign

  1. On the Campaigns page, select Create campaign.
  2. Choose Popup Modal or Announcement Bar, then a starter under Goal & Objective. The preview on the right updates as you choose.
  3. Select Continue with template. The campaign is created and opens in the editor.
  4. Change the text, coupon, colors and targeting, then select Save campaign.

The starters use sample coupon codes such as WELCOME20. Create the same code under Discounts in your Shopify admin before you go live. See Coupons and discounts.

Test on the storefront

  1. On the Campaigns page, select Test on live store, or open your store yourself.
  2. Use a private or incognito window. Popups set to Once per session don’t show again in a tab where they already appeared.
  3. Wait for the trigger. The starter popups open after 1.5 seconds; bars show right away.

Changes you save can take a few seconds to reach the storefront. If nothing appears, see Troubleshooting.
