Coupons and discounts
Create the discount in Shopify, show the code in a popup and apply it to the cart automatically.
Popwell shows a discount code. It doesn’t create one. The discount itself, with its value, conditions and end date, lives in your Shopify admin.
Create the discount in Shopify first
- In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts → Create discount and choose the type.
- Choose Discount code as the method and enter the code, for example
WELCOME20. - Set the value, eligibility and dates, and select Save.
- In Popwell, enter the same code in Coupon code.
The starters use sample codes (WELCOME20, FLASH20, VIP25, SALE40, SAVE10). Replace them with your own code, or create a discount with the same code.
Popwell doesn’t check that the code exists in Shopify. A code that isn’t set up in Discounts shows in the popup but gives no discount at checkout.
The coupon box
In the editor, open Content & Offer → Coupon & Promo Code and turn on Display coupon box.

When a customer clicks the box, the code is copied and the box shows Copied for a moment.
Apply the code automatically
When the coupon box is on and the button’s Destination is Cart or Custom URL, Popwell applies the code before it opens the page. It uses Shopify’s discount link (/discount/CODE), so the code is already in the cart and at checkout. The customer doesn’t need to paste it.
For the other destinations, such as Sign up or Home, the code isn’t applied. Customers copy it from the box and enter it at checkout.
A copy-only popup
The Copy Coupon starter sets the button to Copy code. The button copies the code and the page stays where it is. Use it when you want customers to keep browsing and use the code later.
Checklist
- The code in Popwell matches the code in Discounts exactly.
- The discount is active and its dates cover the campaign.
- The discount’s conditions (minimum purchase, eligible products, customer eligibility, combinations) fit the customers who see the popup.
- If the popup has a countdown, it ends on or before the discount’s end date.
