Updating Metonia

AI Base Tech releases Metonia updates for bug fixes, Shopify platform changes and new features. Updates are free for stores that installed Metonia from the Shopify Theme Store. See the Changelog for what’s in each version.

Before you update

1. Duplicate your live theme: go to Online Store → Themes, open the … menu on your theme and select Duplicate. This is your backup.
2. Note your code edits. If you or a developer changed theme files, save a copy of each changed file. Shopify tries to carry edits over, but can’t always.
3. Check your apps. Apps that added code to the theme may need their app block or app embed re-enabled.

Install the update

1. Go to Online Store in your admin. When an update is available, a notification replaces the version number next to your theme.
2. Select the notification. Select View release notes to see what changed.
3. Select Add to draft themes. The new version appears in your theme library as Updated copy of your theme. Your live theme isn’t changed.
4. Select Review on the updated copy and check the pages you use most: homepage, a collection with filters, a product with variants, the cart drawer and checkout.
5. When you’re happy, select Publish on the updated copy.

Keep the old version in your library for a few days in case you need to switch back.

What is kept

Shopify copies these to the updated version automatically:

• Theme settings (colors, fonts, logo and everything in Theme settings).
• Sections and blocks you added, removed or reordered, and their settings.
• Templates you created, such as extra product or page templates.
• App blocks and app embeds.

Code edits

Code edits made in the code editor are carried over when they don’t conflict with the update. After the update is added, Shopify shows one of these messages:

• Theme added: code edits successfully included: your edits are in the new version. Test them anyway.
• Theme added: code edits could not be included: copy your edits into the new version by hand, using the files you saved.

Edits to files in the Templates folder and to config/settings_data.json are not carried over as code edits. Your template content and settings are kept as described above.

Troubleshooting

I don’t see an update notification. Updates only appear for themes installed from the Shopify Theme Store. A theme uploaded as a zip file doesn’t receive updates.

A section looks different after updating. Read the release notes. New versions sometimes add settings with new defaults; check the section’s settings in the theme editor.

An app stopped showing. Open the theme editor on the updated copy, then check App embeds and the app blocks in your templates.

I want to go back. Publish the previous version (or your duplicate) from Online Store → Themes.
