Languages and markets
Built-in translations, translating your content with Translate & Adapt, and selling in several countries.
Built-in languages
Metonia includes storefront and theme editor translations for English, Turkish, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Add languages in Settings → Languages; published languages use the built-in translations automatically.
The built-in translations cover the theme’s own text: buttons, cart and account messages, filter labels and so on. Your own content (product titles, descriptions, headings you typed in the theme editor, menus) is translated separately, as described below.
Editing theme text
To change a button label or message, go to Online Store → Themes → … → Edit default theme content, search for the text and replace it. Changes apply to the selected language only.
Add and publish a language
- Go to Settings → Languages and add the language. Shopify installs the free Translate & Adapt app when you add your first language.
- Translate your content (next section).
- Publish the language from the same page when it’s ready. Customers don’t see a language until it’s published.
Translate your content with Translate & Adapt
- Go to Apps → Translate & Adapt.
- Choose the language and the type of content, for example products, collections, menus or theme content.
- Enter the translations and select Save.
To translate a single product, collection or page, open it in the admin and select More actions → Localize.
Auto-translate fills in untranslated and outdated fields for you: in the app, select the language, then Auto-translate → Translate. You can auto-translate up to two languages. Review the result, especially product names and care instructions. Store policies must be translated by hand.
Theme content
Headings, button labels and texts you entered in the theme editor are listed under the theme content in Translate & Adapt. You can also translate them in the theme editor: select the element and use Localize. To use a different logo or image per language, go to Apps → Translate & Adapt → Theme settings.
Markets
When you sell in more than one country or language, turn on the Country / region selector and Language selector in the Header and Footer sections. Cart links, checkout and search keep the customer’s language path (for example /fr/).
Set up countries, currencies and pricing in Settings → Markets. To change content for one market only (for example a different shipping message for the UK), open the item, select More actions → Localize, and choose the market and language.
Things to check
- Filters: the tag filter only shows in your default language, vendor filter values always use your default language, and the price filter only shows in your default currency. See Set up filters with Search & Discovery.
- Product recommendations based on product descriptions are only generated for English storefronts; purchase history and related collections still work in other languages, and you can add recommendations by hand. See Search and product recommendations.
- Subscription plan names come from the subscription app. Shopify Subscriptions has its own translation settings for plans.
